Train to outlive the challenges of our present generation, be it in combat or natural disaster”. This is the gist of the message of Major General Perfecto M Rimando Jr, Commander, 5th Infantry Division during the culmination and awarding of the joint 5ID Rifle Squad Challenge and Disaster Rescue and Relief Operations Challenge 2018 held at 5ID Grandstand, Camp Melchor F Dela Cruz, Upi, Gamu, Isabela on July 24, 2018.
The participants to the RSC and DRRO were two different squads from Luzon-based Infantry Battalions and one squad each from the Reconnaissance Companies that are randomly selected through draw lots.
After the two-day competition, the 50th Infantry Battalion was hailed as the Champion in the Infantry Rifle Squad Challenge, while the 86th Infantry Battalion was named as the Best DRRO Squad for three consecutive year on the event, and the 53rd Division Reconnaissance Company nailed the top spot in the DRC-Rifle Squad Challenge Category.
The other winners were the newly organized 95IB and 17IB as second and third place, respectively in the RSC, while the 52DRC and 51DRC as second and third in the DRC-RSC category. The 95IB was ranked second and followed by the 54IB as third in the DRRO Challenge competition.
“The competition also shows the capability of an Infantry Rifle Squad to be converted into a DRRO Squad when need arises. Because those who compete for the DRRO Challenge were Infantry Squads in their respective units,” Lieutenant Colonel William George S Cordova the Assistant Chief of Staff for Education and Training, G8 said during his talk to the participants.
“The need to develop our skills both in combat and disaster relief is a must for us to keep our pace with the challenges brought about by the evolving warfare and climate change. We are still engaging on our counter insurgency effort and humanitarian assistance to disaster relief operation. I urge you to apply all the combat TTPs and SOPs that you have learned throughout the activity in the field of operation,” MGen Rimando Jr emphasized in his speech, challenging the soldiers.# Pvt Mirelle M Pattaguan (Inf) PA
